About This item:
Although the cross is now the
accepted sign of Christianity, it was not always so. Among early
Christians wearing the cross was avoided because of the memory of Christ's
unpleasant death.
The Chi Rho was worn in the
lands of Constantine, the Roman emperor.
Legend says that Constantine
had a vision from God before the battle of Millivan Bridge in 312 and was
given this symbol to be used on his battle standards. Constantine was
victorious at Millivan Bridge and issued an edict of tolerance for
Christianity in the Roman Empire.
